Four terms often misunderstood in online pokies.
Technical language can create a false sense of certainty when it is not explained. A term can be useful and still have clear limits. The descriptions below are a way to read a game information panel more carefully.
- Return to player (RTP)A theoretical long-run measure expressed as a percentage in a game description. It does not guarantee a result in an individual session, a day or a chosen number of spins.
- VolatilityA broad label about how outcomes may be distributed or vary over time. It is not a prediction of how often an outcome will appear for a particular person.
- PaylinesThe patterns through which a game may evaluate eligible combinations. The exact structure belongs to the game rules, not to an assumption based on its theme.
- Feature or bonus roundA named game mechanic. The information panel should explain how it works, while the game rules set out the actual conditions that apply.
- Bet settingThe amount selected for a spin. It should be chosen from a pre-set entertainment budget, not adjusted in an attempt to change a previous result.
What these terms do not tell you
They do not tell you what the next spin will show. They do not tell you that a bonus feature is due. They do not make a higher spend more sensible. They do not replace a time limit or a personal budget. The most useful thing they do is help you recognise when a claim about a game is more certain than the available information allows.
A better reading habit
Open the game information before you play. Read the paytable or rules if the format is unfamiliar. If a term does not make sense, do not assume the meaning from an advertisement or animation. A clear rule should be easy to find before you decide to continue.
No game term is a reason to chase a loss. A previous result does not create an obligation for a future one to balance it.
